Why should you have your oil boiler serviced annually?

OFTEC advises that you should have your oil boiler serviced at least once every 12 months to ensure that the appliance runs safely and efficiently.  

As oil can be easily contaminated, it can impact the reliability of your boiler, therefore by having your oil boiler serviced annually it can help to reduce the risk of costly and unexpected boiler breakdowns. An annual boiler service may also improve the efficiency of your oil boiler which can also reduce your fuel bills.

During an annual oil boiler service, the following should be inspected: the boiler condition, combustion chamber, flue, oil supply and safety controls. A safety and efficiency test should also be carried out.

As fuel nozzles wear over time, they can affect the combustion and reduce your boiler efficiency. The nozzle should be replaced when required during an annual service to ensure that your boiler runs efficiently, and it also prevents the boiler from becoming 'sooted up'. Other boiler components should be cleaned or replaced where necessary.

During a boiler service the oil tank condition should be inspected and the oil tested for any contamination. Water and sludge can accumulate in oil tanks over time often due to condensation and rain water entering through the tank lid, vent or loose fittings. If you have water and sludge in your oil tank it can travel down your oil line and cause it to clog up, along with the filters and nozzle - causing your boiler to go off.

However, having your oil boiler serviced annually isn’t just about reducing the risk of breakdowns and improving its efficiency, many boiler manufacturers require homeowners to have their oil boiler serviced at least once a year by an OFTEC registered engineer in order to maintain its warranty.
